Citing & Writing Resources
Citing & Writing Resources
Why do I need to cite my research?
A citation gives credit to the original author or creator of a thought, idea, piece of art, photograph, etc. You've likely heard a lot about plagiarism, the action or practice of taking someone else's work, idea, etc., and passing it off as one's own. Citing your research, both in the text of a paper and in your bibliography, is the path to avoiding plagiarism.
As a Macalester community member you have access to a tool called RefWorks:
- RefWorks
RefWorks is a Web-based bibliography and database manager that allows users to create and format bibliographies, lists of references and lists of citations. Using special RefWorks plugins, references can be inserted into papers and automatically format the paper and the bibliography in seconds using a wide variety of styles. This resource is available to all current Macalester students, faculty, and staff.
